Because He Loves Us

By Susan Sutton

How could God love me when I was always falling short of His standards?

A friend drew my attention to Jeremiah 31:3 to explain the quality of God’s love. God said to Israel, “I have loved you with an everlasting love,” not I will love you if. . .” He had set His love on His people before they ever had an opportunity to earn that love. God loved them by His choice, not by their merit. They never deserved it, neither before they entered into a relationship with God nor after. Israel’s history is one of continual failure to live worthy of such a love, yet God’s love for them, despite their waywardness and weakness, never ceased. He rebuked them, disciplined them, and allowed their sin to suffer its consequences, but He never stopped loving them or drawing them to Himself.

When I realized the quality of God’s love, a new peace filled my heart and mind, and it changed my relationship with Him. Instead of being unsure of God because I related His love to my level of spiritual performance, I began to relax in His presence. I began to enjoy more fully my relationship with Him. I rested in the joy of being loved by God.

God has not changed throughout the centuries. This love, still undeserved and still unwavering, is available to us today.
